A Deepening IMAN: 2011 Ramadan Drive

At IMAN we feel tremendously fortunate and grateful to once again be able to extend a Blessed Ramadan to you all. Among many other things, Ramadan is a time to reconnect with what truly matters and to recommit ourselves to the principles of inspirational service, sacrifice and transformation that undergird all our spiritual traditions. It is also an extraordinary opportunity to intensify our commitment to the work that is animated by our lofty spiritual teachings and values. Most importantly, it is a time to try and more profoundly root our personal, communal and institutional practices in these traditions. It is a time to deepen.

Consequently, we have committed this year’s Ramadan Drive to the theme of “A Deepening IMAN.” Through this drive we are asking each and every one of you to help us parlay the spiritual imperative of this sacred time into a deepening support for the tremendous work that our leaders, staff members and many volunteers commit themselves to everyday. Our inner-city communities continue to be at the heart of some of the most challenging issues faced by the country, but IMAN believes that work in these communities also allows for some of the most extraordinary possibilities of solidarity, hope and transformation. We also know that in order to sustain our efforts towards building healthy communities at the grassroots level we must, with your help, succeed in deepening the roots of IMAN’s work on all levels.

Each year we rely on our Ramadan Drive to help us raise a critical part of our annual budget and each year we seek to raise a good portion of that online. This year our online goal is a $100k. Your zakat-eligible and tax-deductible donations made to IMAN during this month go towards meeting critical operating and programmatic expenses. Throughout the month we will be calling on you to contribute generously and to spread the word to family, friends and colleagues about supporting IMAN’s Ramadan Drive through their prayers and donations.

Build Community with Us During Ramadan!

The month of Ramadan is an interesting time for staff, leaders and volunteers at IMAN. While we use the opportunity to take stock of our efforts and thank the Most High for every success and teachable moment, we also strive to provide a space for community engagement. Critical services like the IMAN Health Clinic continue to be available to Chicagoans, and the relationships built and stores affected by Muslim Run continue to be cultivated, but in there are also other opportunities for your involvement.

If you are a Chicagoan, then join us weekly for our Ramadan Reflections. Each Wednesday from 6 to 8 PM, IMAN's Scholar-in-Residence, Ubaidullah Evans, will be leading an interactive class and discussion on our engagement with the Qur'an during this blessed time. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we'll conclude each class with a healthy iftar supplied by local purveyor of health, Whole Earth Meats. Toward the end of the month, we encourage you to join us for a Fresh Food Iftar at the Churchview Senior Center, on August 25, just blocks from IMAN's office.

If you are reading this outside of Chicago, there is still plenty of opportunity to participate. Our online Ramadan Drive will be in full swing and you can help by promoting us on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or anywhere else. We'll be sure to put out plenty that you can RT, Share or Plus+1!

IMAN Sharing in the Call for Moral Excellence

IMAN has long held a meaningful bond with African American Muslim followers of the late Imam Warith Deen Mohammed. One of the ways in which the value IMAN places on this relationship is evidenced annually is through IMAN taking part in Ephraim Bahar Cultural Center’s “Walk for Moral Excellence.” This year’s parade on Saturday, July 23, 2011 likewise received IMAN’s full support.
